Do you know that you have since 1961 Big Brothers and Sisters in Delaware that you haven’t seen before?
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware Inc (BBBSDE) began in 1961. They concerned about delinquent and troubled youth and as a result of the efforts of Daniel Daudon and more people, nowadays they have three offices in Delaware (Wilmington, Dover and Georgetown).
BBBS is a private, non profit organization, primary funding sources include United Way, agency-sponsored fundraising events such as Bowl for Kids’ Sake, governmental grants and private and corporate contributions.
The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Delaware is to make a positive difference in the lives of children and youth, through a professionally supported one-to-one relationship with a caring adult.
They have some programs such as Community an School Program.
In the Community Program the volunteer mentors and children are asked to spend 2 to 4 times a month together doing things that they both enjoy. The goal of the friendship is to establish a strong relationship in which the child feels secure enough to ask the volunteer for help with problems.
The School Program tries to provide students with extra adult support in order to help improve self-esteem, boost school performance and enhance social skills.
