Wilmington – The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT) announces that I-295 southbound will be continue to have nightly closures through the end of May at Route 13, in the Farnhurst area, to allow for repairs to the I-95 overpass (Bridge 739). The closure schedule will be Sunday nights from 10:00 pm to 6:00 am Monday; for Monday through Thursday nights the closures will be begin at 8:00 pm and end at 6:00am.
The I-95 overpass was damaged on January 25, 2010 when a tractor trailer traveling southbound on I-295 with an over-sized cargo struck the bridge. Three of the bridge support beams were damaged and bent in the accident. Repair procedures will be performed during overnight periods to decrease impact on commuter traffic during the day.
Drivers traveling at night are encouraged to use alternate routes during the repair period. Motorists traveling south from New Jersey are advised to avoid crossing the Delaware Memorial Bridge due to expected delays on I-295 in Delaware. Before reaching the Memorial Bridge motorists should exit the New Jersey Turnpike or I-295 (South Jersey Expressway) and instead use the Commodore Barry Bridge or the Walt Whitman Bridge to access I-95 southbound.
Construction at the overpass will close I-295 southbound at the US 13 interchange. The detour route will take motorists south on US 13 to Route 141 northbound back to I-95. Additionally, two left lanes on I-95 northbound (over I-295) will be closed between the “salt barn” and the damaged overpass bridge, reducing I-95 lane capacity from five lanes to three. The right lane of Route 141 northbound will be closed in advance of the interchange with US 13 to allow for a free right-turn from US 13 southbound to Route 141 northbound. Other impacts include closure of the ramp from US 13 southbound to I-295 southbound, as well as closure of the ramp from US 13 northbound to I-295 southbound. Access to I-295 northbound from US 13 northbound will not be affected.
The contractor, JJID Inc., will use a repair technique known as heat straightening and apply heat to repair and straighten the damaged beams. The bridge will then be strengthened using new reinforcing angles that will be installed from the I-295 roadway below.
