Dear Editor:

On Friday, August 1st, 2008, Jack Markell unveiled his plan for open government. This plan confronts, head on, the type of backroom glad-handing which has stifled progress and development in this state for decades. By creating a transparent and accountable legislature, Jack Markell will clear the way for a government that responds to the needs of the greater good, not merely an empowered and well connected few.

The national trend, in business and government, has been toward open and transparent processes which inspire public confidence. When businesses and governments have failed to act, and chosen to protect the well – connected elite, the result has been failure and scandal. When businesses failed to reform, the result was Enron. Our neighbors to the north, in Pennsylvania, have failed to reform their state government for decades. The result has been disastrous, both politically and economically.

Jack Markell understands that to promote new investment and economic growth within Delaware, we must have a government that is open, transparent, and understandable. As long as Delaware remains a mysterious place, where connections determine what expenditures are made, outside investors will shrug as they skip past this state for a more favorable business climate.

It is with this in mind, that I have decided to vote for Jack Markell. His policies provide the greatest opportunity for this state to move forward, beyond the politics of influence and collusion, and toward openness and economic prosperity.
