Unfortunately, we are facing a financial crisis and budget that is tighter than ever. If ever there was a time to call on Delawareans to get involved by volunteering, it is now. The State is very fortunate to have countless Delawareans who are involved in community and volunteer service, but we need more, we need you.
I am pleased that candidate for Governor Jack Markell and candidate for Lieutenant Governor Matt Denn came out with a plan on Monday to create business-school partnerships that promote mentoring. A special thanks to the adult role models who have already stepped up to volunteer their valuable time one-on-one with children in need. It is volunteers who will help us close the achievement gap and get more of Delaware's youth prepared for the job market or higher education. With the economy in crisis, families, educators and students need the help of our volunteers.
As a former Foster Grandparent Program Director, I know there is nothing more important to a child at risk than a caring adult that will read to them, help them with schoolwork or just spend time with them. Jack and Matt have my vote because their administration will focus on fostering more mentorship programs and strengthening our volunteer resources.
