REHOBOTH BEACH – More than 150 people gathered on Sept. 26 to discover who would be the winners of the first Hola Awards.
Trophies for outstanding service to the Hispanic community went to Sister Rosa Alvarez of La Esperanza, Father Cesar Gomez of Saint Michael’s Catholic Church and Joe McCarron of La Casita. The three finalists were selected from a list of eight nominees selected by listeners of Hola FM, a WGMD program that airs Sunday afternoon. Jose Somalo, publisher of Hoy en Delaware newspaper, also received special recognition for his 13 years of service in communications.
Among the most moving parts of the evening was a tribute to Georgetown Police Department in particular Officer Chad Spicer, who lost his life on Sept. 1 in the line of duty. His parents Ruth Ann and Norman Spicer accepted a trophy and gave thanks for the support that the Hispanic community has offered the family.
The first Hola Awards ceremony, held at the Rehoboth Theatre of the Arts, was organized by host Kevin Andrade
