“I am extremely happy to be working with our Hispanic children in Georgetown. I feel privileged to be able to do more to increase the wellbeing of our community. My goal is to eliminate the barriers that stand in the way of scholastic success; together we have the power to help our children achieve and ultimately graduate” says Zulma Arroyo-Loomis.
Loomis works with Communities in Schools since February 2nd as the Site Director at North Georgetown Elementary School, where 57.9% of the student body is Hispanic.
Her post is being funded by the Capital One financial institution, with branches in Rehoboth.
Communities in Schools work within particular schools implementing individualized strategies with school administrators, volunteers and community members.
“My work entails the identification of children who are struggling in school and/or may face the risk of not graduating. It may be that they have special educational needs, unstable homes, or need someone to mentor them one-on-one. We have a real interest in seeing students achieve in school” shared Loomis.
“One of our strategies is to establish strong relationships with local businesses, health and social service agencies, parents, and corporate and community volunteers to ensure that the students receive the help they need, in the school, eliminating thus the problems that keep them from focusing in school. We offer two levels of services: level one services impact the entire school (such as health screenings, multicultural fairs, etc.); level two services target forty high risk students and are personalized to meet their individual needs. These students are identified in conjunction with school administrators. We treat our young people as the unique individuals they are and coordinate specific services to support them on the road to success.”
Loomis states that it is important to work with children at early age in order to help them to discover and develop their unique abilities. “We seek their achievement by increasing their knowledge of all the world has to offer.”
