Dover – The Department of Transportation (DelDOT) reminds drivers to expect additional traffic on Delaware’s roadways beginning on Saturday, December 21. Mall and retail center traffic will be particularly congested. Traffic accidents and other unpredictable types of transportation incidents may cause lane closures and/or delays.
Planned lane closures on Delaware’s major roadways, Route 1, I-95, and U.S. Route 202 will be suspended at midnight on Tuesday, December 24 and will resume at midnight on Saturday, December 28; and midnight on Tuesday, December 31 and will resume at midnight on Friday, January 3, 2014.
DelDOT’s Transportation Management Center (TMC) will monitor over 5,500 miles of state-maintained roads around the clock. TMC staff, through a range of automated systems, will monitor and adjust computerized traffic signal systems in response to increased demand and/or incidents.
During the holidays, the State’s three toll plazas: I-95 Newark Plaza, Route 1, Biddle’s Corner Plaza, and Route 1, Dover Plaza will be staffed with extra personnel to help minimize traffic congestion.
Motorists can adjust their routes or travel times by using DelDOT’s Smartphone application. The DelDOT App is available for Apple & Android smart phones and tablets, and can be downloaded free at the Apple and Google Play stores.
DART First State’s statewide transit services, for both fixed route and paratransit service, will not operate on Christmas and New Year’s Day. Additional transit information can be found on DART First State’s website http://www.DARTFirstState.com.
SEPTA Wilmington/Newark line train service will operate on a modified special Christmas Day schedule and on a Sunday schedule on New Year’s Day. For specific times, please check http://www.SEPTA.org.
Motorists are also reminded that Delaware’s Move Over law requires drivers to safely move over to the next lane or slow down for stopped emergency and maintenance vehicles.
