For the first time in its 60-year history, the Delmarva Chicken Festival will be held in Queen Anne’s County, Maryland. A tradition on the Delmarva Peninsula since 1948, the festival will take place on June 19 and 20, 2009 at the Queen Anne’s County 4-H Park near Centreville, MD. The park is conveniently located on Maryland Route 18, a short distance from major highways 301 and 50.

Robert McCormick, a Queen Anne’s County poultry grower and active civic leader, will chair the 60th anniversary celebration of Delmarva’s chicken industry. A veteran of the United States Army, McCormick served in Vietnam with the 1st Infantry Division, after which he was assigned to the White House Communications Agency where he served four presidents. Following retirement from the Army, McCormick was named Director of Telecommunications for the United States Senate. After 38 years of government service, McCormick and his wife, Mary Ann, retired to Queen Anne’s County where he farms and is involved in numerous community, church and service organizations.

McCormick will be assisted by Faith Elliott-Rossing, director of the Queen Anne’s County Department of Economic Devolpment, Agriculture and Tourism. Together they will lead a committee of community volunteers that will coordinate a schedule of family entertainment featuring the festival’s trademark 10-foot giant fry pan, other food concessions, an arts and craft show, business and agriculture expo, live entertainemnt, and carnival rides and games. There will also be educational poultry-related displays, the popular baby chick exhibit, children’s activities, and an antique car and tractor show.

In announcing plans for the June festival, McCormick commented that “With the growing presence of the poultry industry in Queen Anne’s County, it is our pleasure to welcome the Delmarva Chicken Festival to our area. More than 40 farm families in the county depend upon poultry as a source of income while even more families that produce corn and soybeans depend upon the poultry industry as a market for their products. Queen Anne’s COunty is proud to be hosting this annual salute to an industry that brings quality of lfe and has widespread economic importance to the State of Maryland and the Delmarva Peninsula.”

The Delmarva Chicken Festival is sponsored annually by Delmarva Poultry Industry, Inc. (DPI), the regional association working for the continued well-being of the area’s poultry industry.
