Dover –In an effort to reach zero alcohol-related fatalities this holiday weekend six DUI checkpoints are scheduled to occur statewide as part of the Office of Highway Safety’s 2009 “Checkpoint Strikeforce” impaired driving prevention campaign. Some will begin as early as 9 p.m. and last as late as 3 a.m. the following morning.
They are scheduled for:
Friday July 3rd – Newport (NcCo DUI Task Force)
Kent Co (DSP Troop 3)
Millsboro (Millsboro PD)
Milford (Milford PD)
Saturday July 4th – Harrington (Harrington PD)
Smyrna (Smyrna PD)
Now in its eighth year, “Checkpoint Strikeforce” is a multi-state crackdown on impaired drivers coordinated locally by the Delaware Office of Highway Safety. The campaign involves setting up weekly sobriety checkpoints through New Year’s Eve and adding DUI patrols during peak holiday times such as Labor Day, Halloween and the month of December. Twenty-two law enforcement agencies are participating in this year’s campaign.
“Checkpoint Strikeforce” is also one of the three major safety initiatives under the “120 Days of Summer HEAT” campaign targeting violators of Delaware’s traffic laws. Traffic deaths kill and injure Delawareans nearly twice as often as violent crimes.
