Earth Day activities at Delaware Tech free to public Georgetown — In honor of Earth Day, Delaware Technical & Community College will hold a screening of “The Cove” in the theater of the Arts & Science Center from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday, April 19. The event is free and open to the public.
“The Cove” is an Academy-award-winning documentary which illustrates one group’s struggle to end a brutal custom. According to “thecovemovie.com,” ‘the team uncovers how this small seaside village serves as a horrifying microcosm of massive ecological crimes happening worldwide,’ in a remote and hidden cove in Taiji, Japan. This results in a “provocative mix of investigative journalism, eco-adventure and arresting imagery.”
There also will be several exhibits in the lobby of the theater. The Marine Education, Research & Rehabilitation Institute, MERR, Delaware’s only marine mammal and sea turtle response organization dedicated to the rescue and research of area dolphins, seals, whales and turtles will have an information booth.
Also exhibiting will be Rocket Surfboards. The Delaware-based Rocket Alaia Surfboards comprises a design paradigm of all-natural kinetic wood sculptures that are 100 percent sustainable, in homage to surfing’s origin of Hawaii. Sussex County resident Brian G. Peters, of Brian G. Peters Photography, will be present. He has taken his passion for the environment to both art and conservation and will showcase examples of his work. The event is hosted by Delaware Tech Green, the environmental club at the Owens Campus.
Among its efforts, the organization participates in beach grass planting and events at Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge each year and administers the campus recycling program. The club also is sponsoring a flower-planting with children who attend the Child Development Center and several other activities for Owens Campus students.
