Sen. Bruce Ennis, D-Smyrna, issued the following statement on Valero’s decision to close its Delaware City refinery:
“The loss of the Valero refinery and its 550 jobs is a hard blow to the 14th Senatorial District and the state as a whole. It is hard, especially with the holidays upon us, to see our friends and neighbors losing good-paying jobs that have supported their families and helped the state as well.
“Our heartfelt prayers go out to the families as they face the challenge of the refinery closing.
“Right now, we’re told there is a glut of refining capacity, but given the swings in the oil business, we know that can change and, since refineries are valuable commodities because it’s almost impossible to build a new one these days, I think everyone hopes that the facility will attract some interest.
“I stand ready to work with Governor Markell and his team to do all I can to help cushion the loss for the employees and to help either to find a new oil company at the refinery or a new, productive use for the site.”
