Los Angeles, CA – The National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials (NALEO) Educational Fund issued the following statement following today’s release of national population projections by the U.S. Census Bureau:

“According to the Census Bureau’s national projections, nearly one out three Americans (30%) will be Latino by 2050. Latinos are America’s second-largest and fastest-growing population group, and our community’s success is vital for the well-being and prosperity of the nation.

“As the Latino population grows, we must recognize the social, economic, and civic contributions of Latinos to our country. Latinos must have an active role in shaping our public policies to ensure that they address the needs of the Latino community and all Americans. Full Latino participation in the nation’s political life is also critical for the future strength of our democracy.

“The Census Bureau data also project that minorities will comprise more than half of all children by 2023, and more than half of the total population by 2042. By 2050, 39% of the nation’s population of children will be Latino. Latinos are eager to embrace the opportunities this nation offers to improve the lives of their families, their neighborhoods and their communities. As we approach mid-century, we must ensure that the doors of these opportunities are completely open to Latinos. America’s continued progress and prosperity depend on it.”
