SALISBURY, Md.- The sport of boxing has always been known to take a toll on a fighter’s body. But the key aspect is to know when to pull back on the reigns and give ample time to heal.

Local boxer Fernando Guerrero is doing just that. He has pulled out of his next fight. Fernando injured his hand during a sparring session Tuesday afternoon.

The injury will keep Guerrero from fighting a 6-round bout, which was scheduled for July 18 in Tunica, Miss. He was supposed to face veteran fighter Atwan Echols.

The undefeated middleweight will continue to train, but cannot resume sparring until he is cleared by doctors.

The injury is expected to take a few weeks to improve. Manager Hal Chernoff said Guerrero is disappointed with the situation, but should be back on track for another fight in August.
