Festival Hispano to celebrate Chile

El Centro Cultural is pleased to invite the public to attend the annual celebration of Festival Hispano. This year, the community event will be held on Sunday, August 18th in Millsboro. Festival Hispano starts at 12:00 noon and lasts until 6:00 pm. The event is free for the whole family and conveniently located at the Millsboro Little League Complex at 262 W. State Street in Millsboro, Delaware.

El Centro Cultural began the event 19 years ago to highlight local talent and expose area residents to traditional music and dances from Latin America. Festival Hispano is a wonderful day for everyone to experience music, dances, and food. Festival Hispano is a fabulous cultural celebration for the Hispanic immigrants who have come from many different countries to live and work in Sussex County.

Festival Hispano is made possible, in part, by grants from the Delaware Division of the Arts, a state agency committed to promoting and supporting the arts in Delaware. In addition, Festival Hispano is made possible to the following sponsors: Bayhealth Medical Center, Beebe Medical Center, Discover Bank, Division of Motor Vehicles, El Mercado Market, Harvard Business Services, La Tonalteca, M & T Bank, Perdue Farms, and Sussex County Council. El Centro Cultural is proud to celebrate Festival Hispano in the Town of Millsboro and would like to recognize the Town of Millsboro, the Millsboro Chamber of Commerce, and the Millsboro Little League for their support and commitment to Festival Hispano.

Festival Hispano will celebrate all countries of Latin America with a special emphasis on Chile. This year’s program will include traditional folk music and dance groups from the different regions of Chile. Grupo Lonquimay will present dances from the Northern and Southern Regions of Chile. Grupo Rumisonko will present music from the Plateau Region of Chile. Grupo Haka Nini will present dances from Easter Island, which belongs to Chile. Expresiones de Chile will present dances from the center region of Chile, including the Chilean traditional dance of Cueca.

Festival Hispano is proud to have a designated children’s area with a moon bounce, piñatas, activities, and information from social service agencies in the Sussex County which target Hispanic families. There will be a contest of traditional clothes from Latin American countries at 3:00 pm in the children’s area. The contest is open to anyone who wants to participate and there will be prizes for best youth outfit, best adult outfit and best couple outfit. Also, the food vendors will be offering everyone’s favorites: tacos, pupusas, and aguas frescas.

Festival Hispano is one of the activities sponsored by the local arts organization known as El Centro Cultural. Formed in 1995 to provide more artistic, cultural and social programs, El Centro Cultural plays an important role in discovering and promoting local Hispanic artists, supporting local arts education, and coordinating local community events.
