First Steps/Primeros Pasos Early Childhood Learning Center Celebrates Second Graduation

They may be little people, but they have accomplished big things.

Late afternoon at First Steps/Primeros Pasos Early Childhood Learning Center, located on the lower level of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Georgetown, was the scene of much preparation for the graduation ceremony. The nine graduating students practiced lining up and the song they would sing.

Two of the nine First Steps/Primeros Pasos Early Childhood Learning Center students graduated to enter kindergarten in the fall and the remaining students, the youngest two years old, graduated to the next level.

Attended by approximately 50 parents, relatives, friends, volunteers, and staff, the ceremony showed the commitment to the success of those involved in the Center’s success. Town Manager, Gene Dvornick, commented, “Georgetown is very fortunate to have an organization like this for our kids just starting out into the world.”

The Early Learning Center, located at East Pine and Academy Streets in Georgetown, is open to all residents of Sussex County. In addition to preparing the children to enter higher levels and ultimately to enter kindergarten in public schools, the culturally-sensitive early learning program includes teaching both the English language and the Spanish language to all students and respect for each other. Student-to-teacher ratio is l:5 and offers almost individual attention for the children. “I’m elated that two more kids are prepared to enter Georgetown schools,” commented Trudy Cole, Executive Director of the First Steps program. We are planning to reopen our location on 101 Savannah Road, which will house children from age 1-5, with busing from the North Georgetown Elementary School. Georgetown Elementary and Howard T. Ennis School bus to our 122 East Pine Street location.

Anne Camasso, board president, indicated that the fundraising efforts to build a larger, permanent, state-of-the-art facility continue. Contributions to the building fund or operating costs are greatly appreciated.
