International advocacy organization Global Citizen, for the first time awards the Mexico’s Hero Award to Martha Isabel “Pati” Ruiz Corzo for her commitment to the environment and the protection and conservation of the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve and its communities.
The world needs leaders who work to defend and solve the world’s most pressing challenges. We all have the potential to work to change our environment and societies for the better — which is why the Global Citizen Prize honors individuals and organizations around the world who are taking action and who have led with compassion, care, innovation, and dedication to uplift the world’s most vulnerable people.
Global Citizen is a movement of engaged citizens who are using their collective voice to end extreme poverty by 2030. Through our mix of content and events, grassroots organizing, and an action platform, they are building a movement to end poverty. Global Citizen organizes massive global campaigns to amplify the actions of Global Citizens from around the world.
The Global Citizen Prize this year will recognize awardees in the six following categories: Global Citizen of the Year, Global Citizen Prize for World Leader, Global Citizen Prize for Business Leader, Global Citizen Artist of the Year, Cisco Youth Leadership Award, and Global Citizen Country Hero Award.
The category Country Hero Award honors those people around the world that have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals and have defended the most vulnerable. The award will be presented to remarkable activists and organizations from Nigeria, Canada, South Africa, the UK, Australia, Germany, and Mexico.
In Mexico, the recipient of the Global Citizen Hero Award 2020 is Martha Isabel “Pati” Ruiz Corzo for her work in the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, who was elected by a committee of judges, composed of Ninfa Salinas (President, Grupo Salinas Advisory Councils), Gemma Santana (Head of Sustainable Development in the Office of the President of the Mexican Republic), the Government of Mexico City, Rodrigo Kuri (Executive Representative of Citibanamex), Celine Fernandez (Cartier Mexico & Amnesty International Board of Directors), and Alicia Lebrija (Executive President, Televisa Foundation) who selected her as the winner among the nominees, for the incredible work of Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda, I.A.P..
The Global Citizen Prize broadcast special will air on Saturday, Dec. 19, on NBC in the United States, and worldwide on Global Citizen´s Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook channels. The event will be hosted by John Legend, with live performances by Gwen Stefani, Jojo, and Carrie Underwood, among others. There will also be special appearances from Nick Jonas, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, John Oliver, and Nikolaj Coster Waldau.
Martha Isabel “Pati” Ruiz Corzo, an ecological activist, co-founded, Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda (GESG) in 1987 with the help of local citizens to raise awareness about biodiversity, threats to it and to build a grassroots movement to build a regenerative future in the region of the Sierra Gorda in Querétaro. In 1997 GESG achieved the federal decree of one third of Querétaro state territory, the Sierra Gorda Biosphere Reserve, the only example of a Natural Protected Area being created through a local civil movement in Mexico.
Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda is a model of entrepreneurship and social participation in the central Mexico where they reconcile economic development with biodiversity conservation. GESG leads a movement of civil society organizations that form the Sierra Gorda Alliance . This alliance is made up of Bosque Sustentable A.C. (Sustainable Forest), Tourism Products and Services of the Sierra Gorda S.A. de C.V., Joya del Hielo A.C., and Viva Sierra Gorda, a project of Earth Island Institute. Together we promote this living laboratory of best cultural practices for our planet with interdisciplinary teams and constant monitoring and reporting.
GESG´s results include the continuous operation of a grassroots movement that has transformed the local population´s natural resource management practices as well as re-orienting public works and spending to incentivize sub-national climate actions. The Querétaro model for a local climate protocol has proven out and is being replicated in other Mexican states.

En México, la acreedora del Premio Global Citizen Hero Award 2020 es Martha Isabel “Pati” Ruiz Corzo por su labor en la Reserva de la Biosfera de la Sierra Gorda, quien fue elegida por un comité de jueces, compuesto por Ninfa Salinas (Presidenta, Consejos Consultivos de Grupo Salinas), Gemma Santana (Desarrollo Sostenible en la Jefatura de la Oficina de la Presidencia de la República Mexicana), el Gobierno de la Ciudad de México, Rodrigo Kuri (Representante Ejecutivo de Citibanamex), Celine Fernandez (Cartier Mexico & Amnesty International Board of Directors), Alicia Lebrija (Presidenta Ejecutiva de Fundación Televisa) quienes la seleccionaron como la ganadora entre todos los nominados por su increíble trabajo con Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda.
La ceremonia de entrega de los premios Global Citizen será el 19 de diciembre a través de los canales de Twitter, YouTube y Facebook de Global Citizen. El evento será presentado por John Legend y contará con las actuaciones de Gwen Stefani, Jojo y Carrie Underwood, entre otros. Martha Isabel ‘Pati’ Ruiz Corzo, activista ecológica, cofundó el Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda (GESG) en 1987 con ciudadanos locales para crear conciencia sobre la biodiversidad, las amenazas y el movimiento de base para construir un futuro regenerativo en la región de la Sierra Gorda de Querétaro. En 1997, el GESG consiguió el decreto como área protegida para la región, algo único en México pues fue gestionado por la sociedad civil .
Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda I.A.P. es un modelo de emprendimiento y participación social para la Sierra Gorda, donde se concilia el desarrollo económico con la conservación de la biodiversidad. GESG Lidera un movimiento de organizaciones de la sociedad civil que integran a la Alianza para la Conservación de la Sierra Gorda, integrada por Bosque Sustentable A.C., Productos y Servicios Turísticos Sierra Gorda S.A. de C.V., Joya del Hielo A.C. y Viva Sierra Gorda. Juntas impulsan este laboratorio vivo de mejores prácticas culturales a favor de la Tierra con un equipo interdisciplinario y en monitoreo constante.
El resultado de GESG ha sido la operación continua de un movimiento ambiental de base social, que ha transformado las prácticas de gestión de recursos naturales de la población local, reorientando la inversión pública e impulsando la acción climática sub-nacional transfiriendo el modelo de Querétaro a otros estados y países de Latinoamérica.
La transmisión por televisión y livestream de The Global Citizen Prize honrará y premiará a los Global Citizens que son un ejemplo al liderazgo que necesitamos para lograr el mundo que deseamos.
Finalmente, Global Citizen también ha lanzado la campaña de redes sociales #My2020Hero en la que participará Grupo Ecológico Sierra Gorda invitando a todos a honrar a las personas en sus vidas que han hecho algo especial durante este año difícil para apoyarlos, a su comunidad o al mundo.
