The holidays are fast approaching and the requests for monetary and physical help for Delmarva’s needing folks will be many in the next days and weeks. We ask you to remember that there are people on the DelMarVa Peninsula who are unable to work full time jobs, many of whom rarely find a full meal at the dinner table. We need your help.
The Mountaire Farms Thanksgiving for Thousands program is in its fourteenth year and is one of the most respected programs on Delmarva. This year, as in the past, Mountaire Farms is partnering with the Dagsboro Church of God to feed upwards of 14,000 Delmarva residents. This year, as in others, we monitor each request from Food Banks, Churches and individuals for duplication and authenticity. Mountaire will supply a whole bird, all of the technical manpower, lift trucks, refrigerated trailers and any other machinery necessary for the line production during the packing and distribution of the food boxes.
This year a delegation of the six thousand members of the American Legion Post 28 in Oak Orchard, Delaware, (third largest post in the world), will participate with our employees and the community, in the food packing and delivery at their location on route 24. In past years, members of the American Legion Post have graciously supported the food donation program but in November, they will be concurrently packing and distributing the boxed meals from their location to qualified recipients. The Legion will also collect used cell phones for distribution to members of our military troops for use around the world.
On Monday, November 24 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., everyone is invited to join us at either location in a day of thanksgiving celebration, packing food to be cooked by the recipients, our sisters and brothers on this true “thankful to be an American” holiday.
Food purchased from area food markets will be packed at both the Mountaire warehouse in Selbyville and the American Legion Hall in Oak Orchard on the Monday before Thanksgiving by hundreds of volunteers. Each box will feed a family of four. The Mountaire container boxes are labeled, sealed, identified for the recipient, and placed on Mountaire refrigerated trucks. On Tuesday November 25th volunteers will work under tents to satisfy the recipients by name and box number at Dagsboro Church of God located on highway 113 and the American Legion Post 28 on Route 24. At the American Legion Hall, packing will begin at 9:a.m., and pickups will follow at 2:p.m. on the Legion grounds, Route 24
Our belief is that by selecting a nutritious array of staple food and a bird, recipients may cook the meal at home to their own culture and liking. The staple ingredients purchased by Mountaire ensure that the contents of each box are alike and well balanced.
For some, it is difficult to believe that so many of our citizens are in need, but it is true. We invite you to join six hundred of your neighbors packing food boxes on Monday, November 24, and delivering to shut-ins on Tuesday, November 25.
If you’d like to help us to purchase the food staples send a donation to Thanksgiving for Thousands, Mountaire Farms, 29016, Route 24, Millsboro Delaware 19966.
