July 11:  Congressman John Carney filed as a Democratic candidate for governor at the Office of the State Election Commissioner.

He issued the following statement:

“I’m running for governor because I want every Delawarean to succeed. The challenges we have to solve are difficult, and our state needs someone with the vision and courage to lead Delaware into the future. I’m ready for that job.”

Carney, thinks that the state’s top priority should be creating good paying jobs that can support Delaware families.

“Our state is transitioning from an economy built around a few, large employers to a diverse one focused on innovation and entrepreneurship. We need to make sure our state and our workforce are positioned to be successful in this new economy,” said Carney.

Since 2011, Congressman Carney has served as Delaware’s lone member in the U.S. House of Representatives. Prior to his time in Congress, Congressman Carney served two terms as Delaware’s Lt. Governor. Between 2001 and 2009, Congressman Carney developed the Lt. Governor’s Challenge to encourage Delawareans to live active, healthier lifestyles. He also created and implemented the Models of Excellence in Education program that allowed schools throughout the state to share best practices.

“Building a strong workforce relies in part on strengthening Delaware’s schools. Our education system needs to be more flexible and teachers need more resources to help our kids compete in an increasingly global economy”

Under then-Governor Tom Carper, Congressman Carney served as Delaware’s Secretary of Finance and Deputy Chief of Staff. Before that, he was Deputy Chief Administrative Officer for New Castle County, and on the staff of then-Senator Joe Biden. In these roles, he helped Delaware earn its first ever AAA bond rating, played a key role in the state’s purchase of the Port of Wilmington, and worked to cut taxes nine times.

Congressman Carney was born in Wilmington and raised in Claymont by his parents, both of whom were both educators. He attended St. Mark’s High School and Dartmouth College. Congressman Carney returned to Delaware and coached Freshmen Football on the staff of UD Head Coach Tubby Raymond while earning a Master’s Degree in Public Administration at the University of Delaware.

John Carney currently lives in Wilmington with his wife Tracey. They have two sons, Sam and Jimmy.
