One day in 2007, the topic of my leadership class was religion and diversity. The instructor had invited a six-member panel: a Christian, a Muslim and a representative of the Baha’i Faith, a Wiccan, a Buddhist and the sixth person did not show. The representatives shared their beliefs and views. One even spoke of an article he had written questioning the validity of the Bible because of supposed contractions.
Fortunately, the discussions were civil. However, a few of my fellow students became upset declaring their commitment to their religion while seemingly having to defend their faith. I was listening peacefully when all of a sudden I felt duty-bound to speak. My heart was racing; yet, I felt completely guided to say:
“I don’t consider myself to be of any religion but I believe in the ONENESS of God and the INTERCONNECTNESS of ALL HUMAN BEINGS. What the religions of the world fail to recognize is that we ALL have but ONE CREATOR. There is ONLY ONE CREATOR. He has designed each one of us to seek after HIM and ONE day we will all find HIM. In the meantime, it behooves us to recognize how we treat each other, especially if we claim to follow after the True God. I know the scriptures and understand the Bible to be a SPIRITUAL book. If taken LITERALLY there will be so-called contractions. We should never try to explain something we ourselves do not understand. We must recognize that all aspects of the physical world are but shadows of much greater spiritual realities. People suffer because instead of seeking to understand they seek to be understood. Imagine if people lived esteeming others better than themselves. We would live in a better world. This world will come.”
Immediately, I felt a sense of liberation and love for all; then, I noticed the silence that permeated the room. At that moment I prayed quietly that all of us would draw closer to this ONE CREATOR of ALL PEOPLE. When I graduated that program, my fellow-students named me, “most likely to become an ambassador for peace.”
Though this occurred ten years ago, I sense it would be more difficult to have a discussion of this kind today. Tensions are high, impatience abound and people are more fixed to baseless ideas. One of my goal is to improve human relations. At times, I don’t know where to start. I become discouraged when I encounter people unwilling to dialogue or consider others’ perspective. Also, I wonder if we can truly make matters better.
Then I consider, we could start by doing what is right! Become engage! Commit to respecting one another! I believe these difficult times could serve to stretch us toward personal and spiritual growth. Endure and return to “…love out of a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith…” (1 Timothy 5-7). Let love reign!
Permite que reine el amor
Un día en el 2007, mi clase de liderazgo presentaba el tópico de la religión y la diversidad. El instructor había invitado un panel de seis miembros: un cristiano, un musulmán, un representante de Fe de Baharí, un brujo, un budista y la sexta persona no llegó. Los invitados compartieron sus creencias y sus perspectivas. Uno habló sobre un artículo que había escrito donde cuestionaba la validez de la Biblia por sus supuestas contradicciones.
Afortunadamente, la discusión fue civil. No obstante, unos cuantos de mis compañeros de clase se alteraron mientras declaraban y defendían su religión. Yo escuchaba tranquilamente cuando de momento sentí la urgencia de hablar. Mi corazón comenzó a latir rápidamente; mas me sentí totalmente guiada. Dije:
“No considero que pertenezco a ninguna religión más creo en la UNIDAD de Dios y LA INTERCONEXIÓN de TODOS LOS SERES HUMANOS. Lo que no comprenden las religiones del mundo es que TODOS tenemos UN CREADOR. Existe UN SOLO CREADOR. Y ha puesto en cada uno de nosotros el poder de buscarlo y UN DIA lo encontraremos. Mientras tanto, es sumamente importante reconocer como nos tratamos los unos a los otros, especialmente si decimos seguir al DIOS VERDADERO. Conozco las Escrituras y entiendo que la Biblia es un libro ESPIRITUAL. Si se toma literalmente entonces se encontrarán las supuestas contradicciones. Nunca debemos de tratar de explicar algo que nosotros mismos no entendemos. Debemos reconocer que todos los aspectos del mundo físico son meras sombras de las más grandes realidades espirituales. La gente sufre porque en lugar de querer entender quieren que se les entienda. Imaginen si la gente viviera estimando a los otros más que a sí mismo. Viviríamos en un mundo mejor. Ese mundo vendrá.”
Inmediatamente experimenté un sentido de liberación y de amor hacia todos; entonces, pude notar el silencio que invadía el salón. En ese momento hice una oración calladita que podamos todos sentir un acercamiento más profundo hacia el ÚNICO CREADOR DE TODA LA GENTE. Cuando me gradué del programa, mis compañeros me seleccionaron, ‘persona con más alta probabilidad de convertirse en una embajadora de la paz.”
Y a pesar de que éso ocurrió diez años atrás, presiento que sería más difícil tener una conversación de tal índole hoy. Las tensiones están altas, la impaciencia abunda y la gente más apegada a ideas sin fundamento. Una de mis metas es mejorar las relaciones humanas, pero a veces, no si por dónde comenzar. A veces me desanimo cuando encuentro personas que no quieren dialogar o considerar las perspectivas de otros. También, me pregunto si verdaderamente podremos mejorar estos asuntos.
Luego considero que podríamos comenzar “haciendo el bien sin mirar a quién”, como dice mi madre. ¡Comprométete a respetar al prójimo! Creo que estos tiempos difíciles podrían servir para expandirnos hacia el crecimiento personal y espiritual. Debemos perseverar y volver al “…amor nacido de corazón limpio, y de buena conciencia, y de fe no fingida…” (1 Timoteo 1:5-7) ¡Permite que reine el amor!
