Alas! Where are those that prevail against the shrewd (wolf in sheep’s clothing)? They devour the gullible and plot to get them to repeat falsehoods. They know fully well that they won’t ponder and examine to learn whether what they hear is true.
Therefore, their followers become complicit in turning things upside down, calling evil good and good evil. There are too many lovers of money trying to make wealth by conspiring with others. “For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers and they will turn their ears away from the truth and be turned aside to fables. (2 Timothy 4:3)
I discussed this topic with a young lady back in 2006, unaware that it would be more applicable today. We focused on Luke 16:8, which she found puzzling. Was the dishonest steward being commended by his master? How can that be? In the account, the steward is wasting his masters goods with no regards to the consequences of his actions. The master calls him to give account.
Knowing he would be fired, without admitting any wrong doing, the servant goes to the master’s debtors promptly. He reduces their debt to gain their graces. He reduces one debt by fifty percent, another debtor’s by twenty percent. (read Luke 16:3) “So, the master commended the unjust steward because he had dealt shrewdly…” (Luke 16:8).
I shared with her then that, in other words, the master was saying: “How astute! You did exactly what I thought, and you proved me right. You take what doesn’t belong to you. But, now you made sure these debtors will receive you into their homes.”
This parable shows that God sees clearly what we do. No one gets away with anything! This is confirmed by what Jesus said to the Pharisees (Luke 16:15) “…You are of those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your heart. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.”
Like the steward, there are leaders today that operate based on moral deficits. They shortchange people and make friends ‘by unrighteous mammon’ and by illegal gains. They justify themselves. They would even convince you that Luke 16:8 is, supposedly, proof that God approves of this behavior. Believe me, in the past, I was gullible too.
Thank God for the gift of discernment! It helps us to see that it is not true. It also reminds us that all must give account. So, don’t be discouraged if you face shrewd servants in wide-ranging places. But, don’t join in their self-indulgent game either. It only leads to quarrels.
It’s time to grow up. Let’s follow the advice that King David gave his son Solomon, “…be strong therefore and prove yourself a man” (1 King 2:2). In order words, BE MATURE. In gratefulness, share peace and goodwill towards all men!

¡Qué pena! ¿Dónde están aquellos que prevalecen sobre los perspicaces (lobos en ropa de ovejas)? Ellos devoran a los ingenuos y traman para hacerlos repetir mentiras. Saben bien que no investigarán ni examinarán para saber si lo que oyen es cierto.
Por lo tanto, sus seguidores se hacen cómplices y sus acciones viran las cosas de arriba para abajo y llaman lo bueno malo. Existen demasiados amantes del dinero quienes tratan de hacerse más ricos conspirando con otros. “Porque vendrá tiempo cuando no sufrirán la sana doctrina, sino que, teniendo comezón de oír, se amontonarán maestros conforme a sus propias concupiscencias, y apartarán de la verdad el oído y se volverán a las fábulas.” 2 Timoteo 4:3
Conversaba sobre este tema con una joven en el 2006 sin saber que aplicaría más aún a los tiempos que vivimos. Nos enfocamos en Lucas 16:8, versículo que la confundía. ¿Había elogiado el amo al mayordomo deshonesto? ¿Cómo es posible? En la parábola, el mayordomo gastaba los bienes de su amo sin pensar en las consecuencias de sus acciones. El amo lo llamó a dar cuenta.
Sabiendo que lo iba a despedir, pero sin admitir sus culpas, el mayordomo prontamente fue a ver a los deudores de su amo. Le redujo las deudas para asegurar sus gracias, redujo la de uno cincuenta por ciento y la del otro veinte por ciento. (lea Lucas 16:3) “Y alabó el amo al mayordomo malo por haber hecho sagazmente…” (Lucas 16:8)
Comparto lo que compartí con ella ese día. En otras palabras, el amo decía: ¡Qué astuto! Hiciste exactamente lo que pensé, y me has dado la razón. Coges lo que no te pertenece, pero ahora te has asegurado de que te reciban mis deudores en sus casas. Esta parábola muestra que Dios ve claramente lo que hacemos. ¡Nadie se sale con la suya!
En un decir Jesús lo confirma a los Fariseos (Lucas 16:15) “…Vosotros sois los que os justificáis a vosotros mismos delante de los hombres: mas Dios conoce vuestros corazones; porque lo que los hombres tienen por sublime, delante de Dios es abominación.”
Como el mayordomo, existen leideres hoy que funcionan con base en un déficit moral. Estafan a la gente y ganan amigos por medio de ‘las riquezas injustas’ y ganancias ilegales. Se justifican. Van más allá para convencerte de que este versículo es prueba de que Dios, supuestamente, aprueba ese comportamiento. Le aseguro, yo también fui ingenua en el pasado.
¡Gracias a Dios por el don del discernimiento! Nos ayuda a ver que no es cierto. También nos hace recordar que todos tendremos que dar cuenta. Por tanto, no te desanimes si es que enfrentas a un ‘mayordomo’ perspicaz en un amplio rango de lugares. Pero tampoco te unas a sus juegos auto indulgente. Solamente nos dirige a las peleas.
Es tiempo de crecer. Sigue el consejo que dio el Rey David a su hijo Salomón, “…esfuérzate y sé hombre.” (1 Reyes 2:2) En otras palabras, MUESTRA MADUREZ. ¡Con agradecimiento, comparte la paz y la buena voluntad con todos los hombres!
