Sussex Technical High School will host a memorial service and plaque dedication for 2004 graduate Andrew J. (A.J.) Creighton May 27 at 10 a.m. The service will be held at the high school on and the public is invited to attend.
A.J. Creighton was a sergeant in the U.S. Army. He died on July 2, 2010 in Afghanistan while forging a river when returning from a military patrol. SGT Creighton joined the U.S. Army immediately following graduation from high school.
He was a veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom and was awarded numerous medals and decorations for his service. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne), Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington.
SGT Creighton grew up in Laurel. He was an electronics major at Sussex Tech and was a member of the All-State band and Sussex Tech wrestling team. He is buried in the Houston National Cemetery, Texas.
The plaque in memory of SGT Creighton is being given by Bobby Wingate, an Army Airborne veteran who is very active with our country’s veterans, active duty military service personnel, National Guard, and Reserve personnel.
Sussex Technical High School is located on County Seat Highway (Rt. 9), five miles west of Georgetown.
