My name is Maria Thereza Beauchamp, and just as every reader I love my name. My name is the Tittle of who I am. Who might that be? Well, I am a Hispanic Mother, Daughter, Sister, Friend, Entrepreneur and lover of life. I love life so much, that every day I wake up ready to battle and tackle all that comes my way. My family moved to Delaware when I was only 13 years old. Without knowing the language, all odds against us and almost living in the streets, I made it my mission to educate myself and reach higher. During my Middle School years with a very thick accent I became the first Hispanic Student Council President at AI Middle School. That was a turning point in my life. From that day on I knew that Education was power and that I could do anything I set my mind to do. That was the first step to a life full of education, advocating, support and love for all. As I left the commodities of corporate America and chased my dream as an entrepreneur I faced a life full of obstacles and challenges. One thing you learn when you chase your dreams is that not everyone will like that idea or support it. But you have to dig deep inside you and do what makes you complete. As a boutique owner and manager of a modeling and entertainment Agency I saw a platform within the Fashion industry to let my vision and passions be seen. In July 2014 I founded the first ever Delaware Fashion Week, and with a team of individuals we celebrate; fashion, music, arts & awarenesses. Just two months after our successful event, I was diagnosed with Dystonia. It was devastating as I already battle Lupus an autoimmune disorder.
I won’t tell you what the medical terms for Dystonia are. I am going to have you read and imagine what it does to me. Take a deep breath, in and out. Do you feel how great your lungs feel full of air? Now imagine trying to take a deep breath as someone is chocking you. It feels like two hands turning and twisting your neck as you try to take a breath, yet you can’t because there is no airway. All while your body is twisting and turning involuntarily. While you want your legs to go down, they twist left and up. While you gasp for air your neck turns, your eyes twitch and your life is being sucked out of you till someone has to do CPR and 911 is called. You think it was all a dream until you wake up in ICU intubated. That is the moment I knew God loves me and he has a purpose for me. I been in ICU 10 plus times. It is never a pleasant road. It becomes very heart breaking for the people that love you, as they helplessly watch and do what they can. You think Doctors and Nurses know what to do, but that is where our biggest problem is. There is not enough awareness, research or advocacy 98.9% of the time I go to the hospitals, the medical team has no idea what is wrong with me, nor have they seen it before.
During Delaware’s Fashion Week 2015 I was determined to not let Lupus or Dystonia get in our way and make the event happen. God bless me with a wonderful Vice President. Laeia Walsh a wonderful Mother, Wife and Entrepreneur whom took on the task to learn the ropes and give me 100% support while I was away trying alternative medications and doing research for my life. I am in a quest to find my cure. As she was new to our organization she had the support of our Assistant Producer and Photographer Chastity Galarza and our Prestige Empire team. Each individual knew how much Fashion Week means to me. We are not just a Fashion Organization. It is our Goal to support everyone in a Local and National way. To open doors to our youth and give them tools to a brighter future. We are not your typical “Fashion Show”. We openly talk about life’s issues. We individually take time with all the talent and do our best to make sure they see growth and support beyond Fashion. You see this is just our Platform to reach hearts and show everyone that the Sky is not the limit. There is an Universe to Explore. We dare everyone to LOVE and to leave everlasting Footprints.
As a mother, when I see my son Mickey modeling, taking pictures or hosting his own event. I know my Legacy lives in him and as a Mother I am teaching my son that being different is OK.
To reach for his dreams all while loving life and helping one another. I hope my story inspires you to be the best you that you can be. To go after your dreams and work hard for what makes you happy.
I also want to take the time and thank everyone who has supported our events and fundraising campaign. Going out of network to find your cure and a better quality of life can be very costly. My friends and family has been so great by creating a Gofundme Page and doing all types of individuals fundraisers. If you suffer any illnesses, obstacles etc. I dare you to share your story as it is not just healing for you but also empowering for others walking a similar path.

Mi nombre es María Thereza Beauchamp, y me encanta mi nombre. Es el título de lo que soy. Soy hispana, madre, hija, hermana, amiga, empresaria y amante de la vida. Todos los días me despierto lista para luchar y hacer frente a todo lo que se ponga en mi camino. Mi familia se trasladó a Delaware cuando tenía 13 años de edad. No conocía el idioma, con todo en contra y casi viviendo en la calle, hizo imponerme como misión la de educarme a mí misma y llegar más alto. Durante mis años de escuela secundaria, con un acento marcado, me convertí en la primera presidente del Consejo de Estudiantes Hispanos en AI Middle School. Desde ese día supe que la educación era el poder y que podía hacer cualquier cosa que me propusiese. Fue el primer paso para una vida llena de educación, defensa, apoyo y amor para todos. Dejé las comodidades de la América corporativa y perseguí mi sueño como empresaria, me enfrenté a una vida llena de obstáculos y desafíos. Una cosa que aprendes cuando persigues tus sueños es que no a todo el mundo le va a gustar la idea o va a apoyarla. Tienes que ahondar dentro de ti y hacer lo que te completa. Como propietaria de una boutique y gerente de una agencia de modelos ví en el entretenimiento una plataforma dentro de la industria de la moda para hacer que mi visión y pasiones puediesen verse. En julio de 2014 fundé la primera Semana de la Moda de Delaware, y con un equipo de personas celebramos la moda, música, artes y conocimientos. Apenas dos meses después de nuestro exitoso evento, me diagnosticaron con distonía. Fue devastador porque yo ya batallaba contra el lupus, un trastorno autoinmune.
No voy a decir lo que son los términos médicos de la distonía. Respire profundamente, inspire y expire ¿Siente lo grandes que son sus pulmones llenos de aire? Ahora imagínese respirando profundamente y como que alguien le apretase sintiendo como dos manos le estrujan, le dan vuelta y tuercen su cuello a medida que trata de respirar, pero no puede respirar porque no hay vías respiratorias. Todo esto mientras su cuerpo se retuerce y gira involuntariamente. Mientras quieres bajar tus piernas que se tuercen hacia la izquierda, hacia arriba. Mientras tu cuello gira, tus ojos se contraen y tu vida es succionada hasta que alguien te hace la CPR y llama al 911. Crees que todo era un sueño hasta que despiertas en la Unidad de Cuidados Intensivos (UCI) intubada. Ese fue el momento en que supe que Dios me ama y tiene un propósito para mí. He estado en la UCI más de diez veces. Nunca es un camino agradable. Se hace muy desgarrador para la gente que te quiere, sin poder hacer nada… ¿Crees que los médicos y enfermeras saben qué hacer, pero ahí es donde está nuestro mayor problema. No hay suficiente conocimiento, investigación o defensa. El 98,9% de las veces que voy a los hospitales, el equipo médico no tiene idea de lo que está mal, ni lo han visto antes.
Durante la Semana de la Moda de Delaware 2015 yo estaba decidida a no dejar que el lupus o la distonía se interpusieran en nuestro camino y hacer que el evento ocurriese. Dios me bendijo con una maravillosa vicepresidenta. Laeia Walsh una madre maravillosa, esposa y empresaria quien aprendió y me dió 100% de apoyo, mientras que yo estaba tratándome en la distancia con medicamentos alternativos y haciendo investigación para mi vida. Estoy en la búsqueda para encontrar cura. Como ella era nueva en nuestra organización tuvo el apoyo de nuestra Productora Asistente y fotógrafa Chastity Galarza, así como nuestro equipo de Prestige Empire. Cada participante sabía cuánto significa para mí la Semana de la Moda. No somos sólo una organización de noda. Nuestro objetivo es apoyar a todos de manera local y nacional. Abrir las puertas a nuestros jóvenes y darles herramientas para un futuro más brillante. No somos el típico “Fashion Show”. Hablamos abiertamente sobre los problemas de la vida. Nos tomamos tiempo con cada talento y hacemos todo lo posible para asegurar crecimiento y apoyo más allá de la moda. Es nuestra plataforma para llegar a los corazones y mostrar a todos que el cielo no es el límite. Hay un universo para explorar. Nos atrevemos a a amar a todos y dejar huellas eternas.
Como madre, cuando veo a mi hijo Mickey modelando, tomando fotografías o siendo el anfitrión de su propio evento sé que mi legado vive en él. Como madre estoy enseñando a mi hijo que ser diferente está bien para alcanzar sus sueños, a la vez que amar la vida y ayudar a los otros. Espero que mi historia inspire para que seas lo mejor que puedas ser. Para ir tras tus sueños y trabajar duro por lo que te hace feliz.
Quiero tomar el tiempo y dar las gracias a todos los que han apoyado nuestros eventos y campañas de recaudación de fondos. Salir fuera de lo habitual para encontrar cura y mejor calidad de vida puede ser muy costoso. Mis amigos y familia han sido tan grandes, que crearon una página Gofundme y hacen todo tipo de cosas para recaudar fondos.
