ODESSA, Del. – The NEW START Learning Program, an adult education program providing free adult basic education (ABE) and English-as-a- second- language (ESL) services to adults in lower New Castle County, will host tutor training workshops throughout the region January 26 through January 30 for those with an interest in the cause of literacy.
In the U.S., more than 30 million adults cannot read, write or do basic math above a third grade level. In New Castle County, over 12,000 adults over the age of 25 have less than a ninth grade education, making it difficult or impossible to fill out job applications, read labels on medicine bottles or help their children with homework.
The workshops, which will be a blend of online and in-person instruction, will occur at the following locations:
Monday, January 26 at Corbit-Calloway Memorial Library, 115 High St., Odessa from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Tuesday, January 27 at New Castle Public Library, 424 Delaware St., New Castle from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Wednesday, January 28 at James H. Groves Adult High School, 1703 School Lane, Wilmington from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Thursday, January 29 at Bear Library, 101 Governor’s Place, Bear from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Friday, January 30 at Newark Free Library, 750 Library Ave., Newark from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
Individuals can participate in any one of the scheduled sessions, but registration, along with a prerequisite assignment, are required. The workshops are free of charge. To register or for more information, contact Sue Menei at (302) 378-3444 or at suemenei@gmail.com.
