Parents invited to special program addressing bullying and teen suicide

The Indian River School District and the Joshua M. Freeman Foundation invite all parents to attend a special program titled “The Choice is Yours” at Sussex Central High School on Monday, April 16, from 6:30-8:00 p.m.

A panel of experts will discuss issues related to bullying, social media and youth suicide. The program will be moderated by Shannon Pickard, a national teen motivational speaker. Panel participants include school resources officers, school and outreach counselors, and representatives from Delaware Guidance and the state Department of School Climate and Discipline.

The program is being held in conjunction with a series of student-centered assemblies that Mr. Pickard will conduct at Indian River and Sussex Central High Schools on April 16 and 17. This is a research-based program that empowers students to make smart choices while showing them how to tackle tough issues, break the cycle of depression, ignite hope and build self-confidence. Through the use of improvisation techniques, high-energy comedy, direct student involvement and heart-wrenching inspirational stories, Mr. Pickard will address a myriad of topics and issues facing young people today. These issues include peer pressure, substance abuse, bullying, suicide prevention and the perils of technology and social media. He will also talk to students about “gearing up” in preparation for testing and career and college readiness.

“The Choice is Yours” is made possible by a generous grant from the Joshua M. Freeman Foundation, which will also provide door prizes for the parent event.
