Major expansion presented for Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children
Wilmington, DE - To build a healthier future for children, the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children is presenting new capabilities through a multiphase hospital expansion. Opening in 2014, Phase I will support family-centered care with all single-bed rooms, advanced technology and thoughtful amenities to support patients, families and caregivers.
Enhancing the physical, emotional and spiritual healing of the child and family, the new patient care building will feature a five-story atrium filled with natural sunlight, recreational spaces and surrounding gardens.
With this Phase I expansion and other phases to follow, they are creating a children's hospital like no other in the region, giving their patients and families the promise of even better days to come.
Highlights of the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children Expansion:
o New 5-story 450,000 square foot expansion attached to present hospital building
o Dramatic atrium to include an interactive children's discovery zone
o Transforming acute care capacity from semi-private to all single-bed rooms to enhance the patient experience
o Expanding the Emergency Department from 29 to 44 beds
o Adding a rooftop helicopter landing zone
o Increasing parking capacity by 107 additional spaces and underground parking
o Enhancing guest services by creating a Welcome Center in the new atrium
o Planned "Sky Breaking" on August 2011; with Topping Out in 2013; and occupancy in January 2014
o This will be a multi-stage project with the proposed phases being as follows:
+ Phase I - Outlined above
+ Proposed Phase II - Renovation of hospital building with conversion of selected semi-private rooms to single-bed rooms and the creation of a 10-bed inpatient clinical research unit
+ Proposed Phase III - Renovation and improvement of ambulatory outpatient spaces
