Wilmington, DE – The Wilmington & Western Railroad is the front-runner in a vote on which historic site should be depicted on the back of Delaware’s new state quarter.
The railroad, established in 1867 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, got more than 3,700 write-in votes.
More than 25,000 votes were cast online after the governor asked the public to recommend an image. Runners-up were the New Castle Court House, Wilmington’s Howard High School and the Old State House in Dover.
Results of the vote have been sent to the U.S. Mint, which will decide which site wins, and begin issuing the new quarters next year.
Five quarters will be released each year.
