Labor Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the first Monday in September.
The first Labor Day in the United States was celebrated on September 5, 1882 in New York City.
In the aftermath of the deaths of a number of workers at the hands of the US military and US Marshals during the 1894 Pullman Strike, President Grover Cleveland put reconciliation with Labor as a top political priority.
Fearing further conflict, legislation making Labor Day a national holiday was rushed through Congress unanimously and signed into law a mere six days after the end of the strike.

A jobs strategy that both parties can agree on
Were nearly three years into the recession -- and our economy still shows few signs of life. The Department of Labor just announced that the country shed 131,000 jobs in July. Unemployment now stands at 9.5 percent.
Its not surprising that Democrats and Republicans agree that something must be done -- soon -- to stem the loss of jobs. Neither side, though, has offered a creative or comprehensive jobs strategy to turn the economy around. Exposing Irans Enablers
Will the new sanctions imposed by the UN Security Council, the US Congress and the European Union stop Iran from its pursuit of nuclear weapons? The odds would be better if our own Securities and Exchange Commission was fully on board.
UN investigators recently reported that Irans enriched uranium supply is now more than 2,100 kilograms -- enough to build two bombs. That Tehrans nuclear program continues unabated is proof positive that sanctions havent been working.

“I’m pleased that Congress has acted to ensure the security of our seniors’ health care. A 21-percent pay cut to physicians’ payments would have forced some doctors to step seeing Medicare patients – an outcome we can all agree is unacceptable.
We should also agree, as I’ve said in the past, that kicking these cuts down the road just isn’t an adequate solution to the problem. The current system of recurring cuts and temporary fixes was passed into law more than 10 years ago. It’s untenable.
