  • Roadside campaign signs may be installed
    Dover, DE – With some exceptions, political signs can now be installed along the roads throughout Delaware, due to an exemption in state law. Normally, signs installed along the right of way (state-owned strip of land along the roads) are prohibited, but state law allows signs to be installed along the roads 30 days prior and 30 days after an election, with some restrictions. Because there are statewide primaries this year, candidates and campaign workers were able to begin installing signs on August 10.     DART announced the winners of its 14th Annual Statewide Transit Poster Contest. Five winners will receive prizes from DART First State and one of its Business Partners, Wilmington Blue Rocks. Over 27 students from four schools and/or after-school programs statewide participated in the contest, depicting their vision of this year’s theme, “Transit vs. Driving, Why Transit is the Right Fit.” Students researched the bus service and its various destinations and learned of the benefits of riding transit in Delaware.     A record 23.7 million Latinos are eligible to vote in the 2012 presidential election, according to an analysis of Census Bureau data by the Pew Hispanic Center, a project of the Pew Research Center. This is up by more than 4 million, or 22%, since 2008, when 19.5 million Latinos were eligible to vote. Latinos are the nation’s largest minority group.     Because the usual Sept. 30 deadline falls on a Sunday this year, the deadline has been extended to Oct. 1. Payments sent by mail must be postmarked no later than that date. Payments made after Oct. 1 will be subject to a 1.5 percent penalty. This summer, the County’s Treasury Division issued more than 161,000 annual tax bills totaling an estimated $110 million.   • Market Street Mall building fire in Wilmington
    Today, Wilmington firefighters on the A-Platoon were dispatched to 400 Block of N. Market Street for a report of smoke puffing from a four story building. Upon arriving, fire department units found smoke issuing from the fourth floor window area of a building under renovation. The arriving fire suppression companies quickly began an aggressive attack on the fire. Battalion Chief Edward Hojnicki arrived and ordered an additional ladder company to prevent lateral spread of the fire.   • Sussex County Farmer wins $2,500 for Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Company through America’s Farmers Grow Communities
    Clay Tatman of Bridgeville has been selected as a winner in America’s Farmers Grow Communities, which gives farmers the opportunity to win $2,500 for their favorite local nonprofit organizations. The donations are available through the Monsanto Fund. Tatman has designated the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Company, located in Bridgeville, to receive the award in Sussex County. In 1,245 eligible counties in 39 states, farmers could win $2,500 for their favorite community nonprofit. The Monsanto Fund expects to invest more than $3.1 million in local communities.
