  • A Beginner's Guide to the Common Core
The controversial Common Core State Standards are already in our schools – yet most of us know very little about what these new standards are and how they are impacting students and teachers. Here are some basic facts about the standards: • Delaware never officially voted to accept the Common Core. The state "agreed" to meet the standards in exchange for receiving Race to the Top money. The information on Common Core was buried in the fine print. • The Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT), which is used to measure a student's mastery of reading, writing, and math, has been modified to meet C....

  • Voters Influence The Future
If you look at the decisions that are made by our public officials, it's easy to see that they are influenced by the people who vote them into office. That's why voting is so critical to the Latino community. At the same time lets also remember that voting is important not just in the upcoming November 4th election, but in every election at the local, state and national levels. The future of the Latino community and in the long run the future of our nation is at stake because we cannot have a strong America without a strong vibrant Hispanic community. Don't Politicize Education Standards
  • Don't Politicize Education Standards
The U.S. education system recently received a report card from the OECD, a think tank for developed countries. America's grades weren't pretty. Twenty-nine countries out-performed the United States in math. Nineteen did better in reading. America fared even worse than the last time the survey was conducted in 2009. Clearly, America needs higher educational standards. But instead of working with state education leaders to implement such standards, some state legislators are waging a turf war over who decides what kids should learn. This pointless infighting must end. Rather than poli....

  • Latino Youth and Education Policy Issues
The explosive Hispanic population growth of the past few decades has propelled this youthful demographic to American politics’ center stage. Although Latinos have yet to register and vote proportionate to their numbers, we can expect an increase in civic engagement as their education and economic levels continue to improve. Young people have more distractions from following political issues and candidates and actually voting. Because the Hispanic median a....
