Sen. Carper Honors Troops Past and Present this Memorial Day

In anticipation of Memorial Day, Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) – a former naval flight officer – reflects on his own experiences as a veteran and the importance of honoring our troops, past and present, for their sacrifice:

“As a former naval flight officer who served our nation for five years during a hot war in Southeast Asia and for another 18 years until the end of the Cold War, I am grateful every day for the freedoms we enjoy. Our men and women in uniform represent the very best our country has to offer and I know well the sacrifices our service members make by defending our nation. In turn, we have a responsibility to ensure that our heroes have the proper gratitude, resources, and support they need – whether on the battlefield or once they arrive home.

“That’s why serving our veterans and protecting and strengthening veterans’ benefits, including access to high quality health care, education, and job training services, are among my top priorities – every day.

“The men and women who defend our country do so at great cost, and their families are asked to sacrifice so much for our freedom. So on this Memorial Day, and every day, we thank those of you who currently wear the uniform and who have worn it proudly in the past for your service and your courage. Let us never forget.”
