Special Operation Lifesaver Safety Train on May 5th

Norfolk Southern Corporation (NS) and Operation Lifesaver Delaware (OL)* will operate a special round-trip train scheduled to run between Newark and Harrington, with a stop in Dover, on Wednesday, May 5, 2010.

Boarding for invited guests will begin at Norfolk Southern’s Newark Yard at the former Chrysler Plant at 8:30 a.m. The train will arrive in Dover along Norfolk Southern’s tracks between Forrest and Division Streets, just north of the former Dover Station, at 10:55 a.m. (See Timetable Below)

This special trip will bring passengers’ attention to a number of contributing factors relating to highway-rail grade crossing crashes and right-of-way trespassing incidents. Such crashes, injuries and fatalities are among the most preventable challenges to our safety that we will ever face. Invitations were sent to state and local officials, legislators, transportation specialists, local planning groups, railroad customers, fire and EMS facilities and representatives of state and local police departments.

To make the trip more meaningful, the train’s locomotive will be camera-equipped and video-linked to allow passengers to receive a live engineer’s eye view of the track ahead. In addition, railroad and Operation Lifesaver representatives will be on board to share information through individual conversations, PA announcements and handout materials.
