WASHINGTON—The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) Subcommittee on the Church in Latin America approved funding for 132 projects in Latin America and the Caribbean, worth over $3.1 million, to aid pastoral work in that region. The funds also will allow young people to attend World Youth Day (WYD) in Brazil, July 23-28.
On March 21, the subcommittee approved a total of 129 grants for projects in 19 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, and three for reconstruction efforts in Haiti. The amounts awarded were a little over $2 million from the Collection for the Church in Latin America, and $1.1 million from the Special Collection for the Church in Haiti, which funds the reconstruction projects.
Some conferences of bishops received funding to strengthen youth ministry programs in preparation for World Youth Day. For example, the Conference of Bishops of Ecuador received a $30,000 grant to hold their third National Youth Congress. This event will help gather youth who are unable to go to WYD and prepare those who will attend the event in Brazil. “We are very glad to continue helping youth across the hemisphere to attend World Youth Day and have an opportunity to see Pope Francis,” said Bishop Eusebio L. Elizondo, M.Sp.S, auxiliary bishop of Seattle and chairman of the USCCB Subcommittee on the Church in Latin America.
“We are committed to supporting migrants and helping provide pastoral care to them not only in our country but also across the Americas. With this in mind, projects related to the pastoral care of migrants and refugees also received funding at this meeting,” said Bishop Elizondo.
In Peru, the conference of bishops received a grant of $15,000 to strengthen Pastoral de Movilidad Humana, the conference’s official organization for the pastoral care of migrants.
The subcommittee also supports the pastoral care of migrants at the regional level. Members approved funding for Latin American Church leaders to attend this year’s Consultation on Migration, which will take place in Los Angeles. The consultation brings together Church leaders from the United States and over ten countries in the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America. Representatives will work to understand the impact of migration and to improve the pastoral care of migrant workers.
In Haiti, reconstruction grants are showing results. “We are pleased to see our efforts beginning to pay off as reconstruction is finally gaining momentum for the Church of Haiti. Our approval of new reconstruction grants helps maintain this momentum,” said Archbishop Thomas G. Wenski of Miami, a member of the Subcommittee on the Church in Latin America. “We also are pleased to continue supporting pastoral projects throughout Haiti.”
The subcommittee approved $575,000 for the reconstruction of the church of Sainte Genevieve des Orangers, in a poor and rural suburb of Port-au-Prince, near Croix des Bouquets. The church, built in 1978, was damaged by the 2010 earthquake, and must be demolished and reconstructed. This grant, combined with a $50,000 gift from a parish in Hartford, Conn., will allow for reconstruction.
The Subcommittee on the Church in Latin America oversees the Collection for the Church in Latin America as part of the USCCB Committee on National Collections.

Los fondos también permitirán a jóvenes asistir a la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud (JMJ) en Brasil, Julio 23-28.
El subcomité aprobó el 21 de Marzo, un total de 129 subsidios para proyectos en 19 países de América Latina y el Caribe, y tres para proyectos de reconstrucción en Haití. En total, se aprobaron poco más de dos millones de dólares de la Colecta para la Iglesia en América Latina, y los proyectos de reconstrucción en Haití recibirán 1,1 millón de dólares en fondos de la Colecta Especial para la Iglesia en Haití.
Algunas conferencias de obispos recibieron fondos para fortalecer programas de ministerios juveniles en preparación para la Jornada Mundial de la Juventud. En Perú, la conferencia de obispos recibió un subsidio de 15,000 dólares para fortalecer la Pastoral de Movilidad Humana, que es la organización oficial de la conferencia episcopal para el cuidado pastoral de migrantes.
El subcomité continúa apoyando el cuidado pastoral de migrantes a nivel regional. Por ello, los miembros aprobaron fondos para que líderes de la iglesia en América Latina asistan a la Consulta sobre Migración que este año se llevara a cabo en Los Ángeles. La Consulta reunirá a líderes de iglesias de diez países en el Caribe, México y Centroamérica. Los representantes trabajaran para entender el impacto de la migración y mejorar el cuidado pastoral de trabajadores migrantes.
En Haití, los subsidios para reconstrucción ya están mostrando resultados. “Estamos contentos de ver que nuestros esfuerzos están comenzando a mostrar resultados en momentos en que las obras de reconstrucción de la Iglesia en Haití se aceleran”, dijo el Arzobispo Thomas G. Wenski de Miami, miembro del Subcomité para la Iglesia en América Latina. “Nos agrada también continuar apoyando proyectos pastorales en Haití”.
