Georgetown, DE. On August 25th Sussex Academy opened its doors to almost 500 students, including a new 10th grade. Sussex Academy, a charter school located in Georgetown, DE offers an expeditionary approach curriculum in a public, tuition-free environment. An International Baccalaureate program will be offered to all students in grades 11 and 12.

“The first day of school is always very exciting,” said Dr. Patricia Oliphant, Director of Curriculum and Instruction. “It is great to see all of our students ready to enter their classrooms and learn as much as possible.”

The first week of school will be spent establishing routines and providing students with the academic and social expectations for the year ahead.

Sussex Academy currently serves grades 6 to 10, with a plan of adding a grade level per year for the next two years. During the spring and summer, new classrooms, restrooms, locker rooms and a high school student lounge were built. Building plans for next spring and summer include a library, cafeteria, performing arts stage, classrooms and sports fields. In 2016, the construction process will be complete and the school will service grades 6 to 12.

Sussex Academy is a high performing school and has been ranked in the top 5 schools in Delaware for the last 12 years. There is a lottery in place for grade 6. Applications are accepted beginning in November and a public lottery is held in January. There are currently open positions in grades 9 and 10.
