On February 9th, 7 amazing individuals arrived in Guatemala to help build with Hábitat para la Humanidad Guatemala.
For many, it was their first time to a third world country, and for all of them, it was one time that they would never forget.
The first days of arriving in Guatemala, the team got acquainted with the country and spent time enjoying Antigua before they traveled closer to the work site
in Sololá.

The team was welcomed on site Sunday by the Habitat for Humanity Sololá affiliate and met the staff as well as the family they would be building with that week. Filomina and her daughter attended the welcome ceremony and shared a little of their life story.
After a recent earthquake, Filomina’s home was critically damaged and was unsafe. The team’s goal was to help accelerate the process for her and her family to move into their new home, helping them feel safer and have more of the amenities of a newer home in Guatemala, such as a new piped stove and bathroom.
Day 1
(Picture 2) On Monday, we were warmly welcomed on site by Filomina and the masons, whom we would be working with all week. The team started off first getting familiar with the site and learning tasks. Some of the group cut rebar while others bent rebar using a template made on a stump! In the afternoon, some mixed concrete with the
help of the masons!

(Picture 5) The hooks were then placed to hold 2 rebar together. Tom Protack, Community Engagement Director for SCHFH and Amanda Deschenes, Co-team leader are tying the hooks onto the rebar above. These “ladder-like” structures are placed into u-cinder blocks to provide more stability in the home.

Luis told us a little more about the plans for Habitat for Humanity in Guatemala and its goals for the coming years, which includes water filtration projects and outside piping for stoves.
Day 2
(Picture 7) On Tuesday morning, we saw results of our hard work! A couple rows of cinder block were added onto the home! Tuesday, the team continued with some of the tasks that they did the day before, while others learned new tasks!

(Picutre 11) Tuesday was Mardi Gras! The children dressed in costumes and took part in a parade on the main street! The team was able to see two parades in the morning, an experience they will never forget!

Day 3

(Picture 14) Wednesday was Ash Wednesday and Filomina brought us to her local church to attend Mass with her.
(Picture 15) Wednesday was also Denise Jackson’s birthday! We celebrated by setting off firecrackers, singing “Happy Birthday” and hitting a piñata!

Day 4
(Picture 17) On Thursday, scaffolding was up to start on the higher levels of block!

Day 5

The team arrived on the build site with ambivalent feelings: a sense of accomplishment and happiness that soon Filomina and her family would have a simple, decent affordable house to live in while at the same time a bit of sadness as we would probably never see our new friends (masons) and Filomina ever again. The team worked until noon, shared lunch, then participated in the house dedication ceremony which mirrors the house dedications we do in Sussex County. The representative from Habitat Sololá shared about the experience, Kevin Gilmore presented Filomina and her daughter Mileta with a Bible, the construction team (masons and assistants) thanked us and offered brief reflections. Afterwards, we shared in some native Guatemalan cake and enjoyed each other’s company. As we departed, the masons, assistants and family we met only a few days ago hugged us, thanked us and promised to pray for us!
No doubt, the Mission of Habitat for Humanity was fulfilled: Seeking to put God’s love into action by bringing people together to build homes, communities and hope!
What we all learned on this trip is that beauty and hope are everywhere, friends can be made quickly, you can grow in one week of service, and you can change someone’s life, by using your own to help others!

El 9 de febrero, siete personas increíbles llegaron a Guatemala para ayudar a construir una casa con Habitat for Humanity – Guatemala. Para muchos, era su primera vez en un país del tercer mundo, y para todos, un momento que nunca olvidarán. Durante los primeros días de su llegada a Guatemala, el equipo se familiarizó con el país y pasó un tiempo disfrutando de Antigua antes de viajar al lugar de trabajo en Sololá.

El equipo fue recibido en el hotel el domingo por la filial de Habitat para la Humanidad Sololá y se reunió con el personal, así como con la familia para la que construirían esa semana. Filomina y su hija asistieron a la ceremonia de bienvenida y compartieron un poco de la historia de su vida. Después de un reciente terremoto, la casa de Filomina casa resultó dañada gravemente y no era segura. El objetivo del equipo era ayudar a acelerar el proceso de construcción para que la familia se mudara pronto a su nueva casa, que les ayudaría a sentirse más seguros y tener las comodidades de una casa nueva en Guatemala, tales como una estufa nueva y cuarto de baño.
Día 1
(Fotografía 2) El lunes Filomina y los albañiles nos dieron una cálida bienvenida en el lugar. El equipo comenzó a familiarizarse con el sitio y las tareas de aprendizaje. Algunos del grupo aprendieron a cortar barras de refuerzo, otros doblaron barras de refuerzo usando una plantilla ¡hecha en un tocón! Por la tarde, algunos mezclaron hormigón ¡con la ayuda de los albañiles!

Tom Protack, director de participación comunitaria de SCHFH y Amanda Deschenes , co-líder del equipo atando los ganchos en la barra de refuerzo superior. Son estructuras “como escalera” que se colocan en los bloques de cemento para dar más estabilidad a la construcción.

Día 2
(Fotografía 7) ¡El martes por la mañana, vimos los resultados de nuestro duro trabajo! ¡Un par de filas de bloques de hormigón se añadieron a la casa! El martes, el equipo continuó con algunas de las tareas que hicieron el día anterior ¡mientras que otros aprendieron nuevas tareas!

Día 3

Día 4

Día 5: ¡Día de la Dedicación y Bendición!
(Fotografía 20) El equipo llegó a la construcción con sentimientos ambivalentes: un sentido de logro y felicidad porque pronto Filomina y su familia tendrían una casa sencilla, decente y asequible para vivir, mientras que al mismo tiempo, tristeza porque probablemente nunca volviésemos a ver a nuestros nuevos amigos (albañiles) y Filomina nunca más. El equipo trabajó hasta el mediodía, compartimos el almuerzo, y participamos en la ceremonia de dedicación de la casa como las dedicatorias que hacemos en Sussex. El representante de Habitat Sololá compartió la experiencia, Kevin Gilmore presentó a Filomina y su hija Mileta con una Biblia, el equipo de construcción (albañiles y ayudantes) nos dió las gracias y ofreció unas breves reflexiones. A continuación, compartimos con gente de Guatemala el pastel y disfrutamos de la mutua compañía. A medida que nos fuimos, los albañiles, ayudantes y familia que conocimos sólo unos días antes nos abrazaron, nos dieron las gracias y prometieron orar por nosotros.
Sin duda, la misión de Habitat for Humanity se cumplió: Buscando poner el amor de Dios en la acción de juntar gente para construir hogares, comunidades y ¡esperanza!
Todos hemos aprendido en este viaje que la belleza y la esperanza están en todas partes, los amigos pueden hacerse rápidamente, puedes crecer en una semana de servicio, y cambiar la vida de alguien, y que somos nuestros dueños para ayudar a los demás
