November 15 marks the 12th Annual America Recycles Day (ARD) and according to the ARD website, “[it] is the only nationally recognized day dedicated to encouraging Americans to recycle and to buy recycled products.”
Sussex County Habitat for Humanity is offering several avenues for citizens to take part in ARD and help the environment, themselves, and their neighbors. Among the ideas is pick-up service for citizens who wish to donate gently used appliances, cabinets, furniture, and building materials to Habitat’s ReStore.
“This concept benefits everyone concerned,” said Denise Jackson, ReStore manager. “It keeps huge items out of the landfill, the donor may get a tax deduction, the people purchasing the second-hand items at a reduced price are happy, and the money raised from ReStore helps to fund a Habitat home for a family in need.”
ReStore sells donated new and gently used appliances, cabinets, furniture, doors, and windows, Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sussex County Habitat for Humanity operates ReStore to help with funding for more Habitat homes. The profits go directly to Habitat’s mission of building simple, decent, and affordable homes in partnership with Sussex County families.
Another program offered by Habitat for Humanity is “Cars for Homes” which is a vehicle donation program that helps fund homes. It is possible to donate your car, truck, boat, RV, motorcycle, or construction vehicle by calling 877-277-4344 or by going online to www.carsforhomes.org. Again, a tax deduction is likely but you should check with your tax advisor or the IRS.
Sussex County Habitat for Humanity is affiliated with Habitat for Humanity International and is a Christian-based organization. Since 1991, through volunteer labor and donations of money and materials, Sussex County Habitat has built 44 homes in Sussex County. Sixty-six adults and 120 children live in Habitat homes.
