Sussex Technical High School 2023 Teacher of the Year Candidate

(Georgetown, DE) On October 11, the Delaware Department of Education will honor 20 of the state’s top teachers during a dinner at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover. The celebration will conclude with the announcement of Delaware’s 2023 Teacher of the Year. 

Sussex Technical High School is pleased to announce that Mr. Matthew Lewis is the school’s candidate for the Delaware 2023 Teacher of the Year.   

Mr. Lewis has been the ninth and tenth grade Social Studies educator at Sussex Technical High School for fourteen years.  He joined the Raven family after earning a Bachelor of Arts and receiving the “Outstanding Student Teacher” award at the University of Delaware. At Tech, he has been a leader in his professional learning community and his department. Through his Master of Education work in career and technical education at Wilmington University, numerous professional development endeavors, and various leadership roles, he continues to learn and evolve. In addition to his classroom work, he has greatly invested in the school’s men’s and women’s soccer programs, where he has been recognized multiple times as one of the top assistant coaches in the state. Lewis is consistently visible at a myriad of school events, as he is genuinely dedicated to bettering all his students’ lives and fostering a positive school community. 

The 2023 Delaware Teacher of the Year will become the state’s nominee in the national program, a project of the Council of Chief State School Officers in partnership with the Voya Foundation.  The recipient will also receive funds for professional and personal use. 

Sussex Technical High School is a public school which prepares Sussex County, DE students in grades 9-12, for their future success in both higher education and workforce environments.
