Sussex Unity will hold a public forum entitled “Call to Action: Support the Undocumented Immigrant Community in Sussex County” on Thursday May 7, 2015 from 6:30 to 8:30. The forum will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church located at 122 E. Pine Street in Georgetown, DE.
The forum will include the showing of the Student Academy Award-winning video “Sin Pais (Without Country),” from the PBS POV series, that attempts to get beyond the partisan politics and mainstream media’s ‘talking point’ approach to immigration issues by exploring one Guatemalan family’s complex and emotional journey involving deportation. A panel of experts, including representatives from social services and the legal community, will explain the many issues and concerns facing the undocumented immigrant community and will welcome questions from the audience.
According to Don Peterson, Chair of the Sussex Unity Immigration Committee, the purpose of the forum is to educate the public about the concerns and challenges faced by this underserved community. “We hope that participants will leave the meeting with a better understanding of the scope of the issues and a commitment to work in support of this community,” Peterson says.
Fay Blake, Chair of Sussex Unity, believes that the immigrant community, both documented and undocumented, is an underserved community here in Sussex, in terms of housing, health, and education. “We are excited to be sponsoring this first ever public meeting on the needs of this community here in Sussex County who, like many others, are often ignored and misunderstood.”
