On Mother’s Day, I felt melancholic. Instead of wanting to celebrate, I prayed for women around the world. I prayed that inner contradictions that plague many would be replaced with a desire to seek God’s will, especially regarding the treatment of women. After all, God values women to the same degree as men. Both are His instruments for bringing forth life on the earth.
Yet, in many parts of the world women suffer on account of their gender. It is important to examine the biases and negative actions that hinder women’s development. For instance, in men dominated cultures, women are devalued and constrained from guiding their own children.
Even in our day and age, mothers witness their own daughters’ suffering for wanting a better life. An example of this was seen recently in the news. A group of extremist kidnapped a group of young Nigerian girls from their school. Despite their cries and tears, the misled men threatened to sell these girls as slaves or young brides.
As long as the lie of inequality between male and female is promoted and believed, women will continue to suffer unnecessarily. Also, men will hinder their own growth. This is because when men reject women they are in essence rejecting themselves. One is not without the other. Spiritually speaking, they have equally-important and corresponding roles.
Together they make ONE, in the likeness of God (Genesis 5:1). The apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 5:31-32 “…the two shall become one flesh. This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church.’ Neither is man without the woman or the woman without the man. But as Solomon noted in Ecclesiastes 7:9: “This only have I found: God created mankind upright, but they have gone in search of many schemes.”
One of the scheme is to devalue women. Still, God sends men and women to share a message contrary to that lie. Unfortunately, in many instances, they are rejected and maligned. Jesus expressed it this way: “O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! Matthew 23:37”
Have you ever pondered why Jesus used this image? I am convinced that it was to demonstrate His relationship with women, to show the value of mothers and show us one of His many responsibilities in the Kingdom. It is Christ who brings forth children to God, the Father. We are literally and spiritually born from the Heart of a Mother. My hope is that we learn to value one another!

El día de las madres, me sentía melancólica. En lugar de querer celebrar, quería orar por todas las mujeres del mundo. Recé para que las contradicciones internas que plagan a muchos fueran reemplazadas por un deseo de buscar la voluntad de Dios, especialmente en lo que se refiere al tratamiento de las mujeres. Después de todo, Dios valora a las mujeres en la misma medida que a los hombres. Ambos, son sus instrumentos para traer vida en la tierra.
Sin embargo, en muchas partes del mundo las mujeres sufren a causa de su género. Es importante examinar los prejuicios y las acciones negativas que impiden a las mujeres desarrollarse. Por ejemplo, en culturas donde dominan los hombres, las mujeres son devaluadas y hasta se les impide el que enseñen a sus propios hijos.
Aún en nuestra época, las madres son testigo del sufrimiento de sus propias hijas cuando abogan por una vida mejor. Recientemente en las noticias vimos un ejemplo de esto. Un grupo de jóvenes nigerianas fueron secuestradas de su escuela por un grupo de extremistas. A pesar de sus gritos y llantos, los hombres ignorantes amenazaban con vender a las jóvenes como esclavas o darlas en matrimonio.
Mientras más se promueve la mentira de que la mujer es menos que el hombre más sufrirán las mujeres innecesariamente. Además, los hombres impedirán su propio crecimiento. Esto es porque cuando los hombres rechazan a las mujeres en esencia se están rechazando a sí mismos. Uno no es sin el otro. Espiritualmente hablando, ambos tienen funciones igualmente importantes y correspondientes.
Juntos hacen Uno, a semejanza de Dios (Génesis 5:1). El apóstol Pablo escribe en Efesios 5:31-32 “…los dos serán una sola carne. Esto es un gran misterio, pero hablo con respecto a Cristo y la iglesia.” Tampoco es el hombre sin la mujer o la mujer sin el hombre. Pero como observó y escribió Salomón en Eclesiastés 7:29: “He aquí, solamente esto he hallado: que Dios hizo al hombre recto, pero ellos buscaron muchas perversiones.”
Uno de esas perversiones es el desvalorizar a la mujer. Todavía, Dios nos envía a hombres y mujeres para compartir un mensaje contrario a esa mentira. Desafortunadamente, a ellos se les rechaza con calumnia. Jesús lo expresó de esta manera: ¡Jerusalén, Jerusalén, que matas a los profetas, y apedreas a los que te son enviados! ¡Cuántas veces quise juntar a tus hijos, como la gallina junta sus polluelos debajo de las alas, y no quisiste! Mateo 23:37
¿Ha meditado alguna vez en el por qué Jesús usó esta imagen? Estoy convencida de que era para demostrar su relación con las mujeres, darle el valor que merecen las madres y enseñar una de sus responsabilidades en el Reino. Es Cristo quien trae a los hijos e hijas a Dios Padre. Literalmente y espiritualmente nacemos del corazón de una Madre. ¡Mi esperanza es que aprendamos a valorarnos!
