Train derails in Bridgeville, prompts precautionary evacuations

Propane tanker and gravel cars involved, but no evidence of leak

A propane tanker and several gravel cars derailed along Wilson Farm Road south of the Wesley Church Road intersection near Bridgeville this morning, prompting a precautionary evacuation of a handful of homes, though no spill or leak is occurring at this time.

The mishap occurred just after 9:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. There are no injuries reported from the derailment of the Norfolk Southern train. Initial inspection of the propane tank by the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Company and Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC) shows no evidence of any leak. Both Wilson Farm Road and Wesley Church Road are closed to traffic at this time.

As a precautionary measure, some residents in the area of the derailment have been evacuated. Evacuees are reporting to the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Company at 311 Market Street. The Red Cross of the Delmarva Peninsula will provide assistance to evacuees, as needed, at the fire company. At this hour, seven evacuees have reported in at the center.

The Sussex County Emergency Operations Center and Sussex County Emergency Medical Services are assisting Bridgeville Fire Company in the response with the County’s mobile command unit and personnel.
