NEWARK, Del. – The U.S. Census Bureau is opening the doors to its New Castle Census Office Tuesday, February 3.
The open house event, coupled with upcoming address canvassing efforts, initiates the countdown to Census Day. The New Castle Census Office’s doors open to guests at 10am, and tours of the office are following the ceremony.
The office begins hiring hundreds of Delaware residents in the next month. Employees will be trained to use hand-held computers equipped with global positioning systems to validate the addresses of every household in the state this spring. The Census Bureau will use these updated addresses when mailing or delivering questionnaires in 2010.
Philadelphia Regional Director Fernando E. Armstrong states, “We are proud to host the Philadelphia Region’s first open house in ‘The First State.’ We are building upon the achievements of Census 2000, and making improvements to ensure an accurate count for Delaware. Our partners are crucial component of a successful 2010 Census.”
Delaware Representative Joseph Miró and First State Action Community Action Agency Executive Director Bernice Edwards are joining eight-term U.S. Representative Michael Castle in welcoming the U.S. Census Bureau to the area.
The Newark office is located on 200 Continental Drive, and is convenient to public transportation, Interstate 95, and State Routes 1, 4, and 7. Parking is available. The Newark office is one of 150 local census offices that opened throughout the country in 2008.

The U.S. Constitution requires a population and housing count every 10 years. The effort employs some of the most sophisticated technical and operational tools available, as well as a work force of 1.4 million temporary employees to count every man, woman and child once and in the right place. Census results are the basis for congressional representation as well as the distribution of federal, state and local funds totaling more than $300 billion annually. Census Day is April 1, 2010.
