In the midst of the worst financial crisis in America, not all seems to be dark and depressing, despite the lack of jobs and families struggling to make the ends meet, some citizens look around and see in disbelief that God is always raising up people, willing to lay down their lives in desperate service, reaching out for the needy, carry on the ‘Commandment of the Gospel’ of taking care of the widows and the fatherless as James 1:27 states, “ Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.”

People like Richard and Mayra Portalatin, founders of Hearts Unlimited, a non-profit organization based in Milford and Rehoboth Beach, fueled by the love of Jesus and the compassion for their neighbors, this Christian couple is working hard to take the service and ministering of Jesus to another level, where actions speak louder than a thousand words.

Looking at the information pamphlet of their Ministry you can read: Restoring the Life in Our Community With the Love of Jesus Christ.

We’ll Pick Up Your Donation Cloth, Furniture, Food, New Toys, or Any Other Donation That Will Help.

Hearts Unlimited is a faith-based organization that will have a strong voice for needy individuals and families in our community, regardless of their religious affiliation. We are extending this invitation to the entire community. Hearts Unlimited will offer food, clothing/ winter coats, school supplies, and transportation to those in need. There is not donation too small to make a difference.

Our goal is to make a real difference in the community. Please be assured that all monies collected are returned back to the community and no one accepts a salary for their services. Checks can be made payable to Hearts Unlimited.

Please help; your support is needed so that our community can be helped. You will be blessed in a very special way.

Since I wanted to find out more about Hearts Unlimited’s goals, I requested some words from Richard, so what follows it’s a short interview to get to know this Ministry much better.

Who are the ‘hearts’ behind the scene? Describe the people in your Ministry

Behind the scene of Hearts Unlimited are my wife and myself; we are the cores of this organization. We have the priceless support of the Comfort Inn hotel in Rehoboth Beach, that let us use their facilities as a drop point for the toy drive in the holidays. The Milford Church of God serves for the same purpose as well.

Why ‘Hearts Unlimited? How did you come up with this name?

The people behind hearts Unlimited are very Christian and realize the need for help, to get people back on their feet, we were once at the point of need to pass every week. We know what it feels like to be in need. If you have a heart and if it can go a long way to help someone unlimitedly, then you will be blessed. Hearts Unlimited means going a long way to help people.

When did you receive this vision or idea?

I always wanted to open an organization to help the needy but never knew how to do this, so when I accepted Jesus in my life and was born again the time that God will use me had come. I have been around homeless people, drug addicts, and worst things you can imagine. Hearts unlimited will make a difference with your support; we need more bible studies, more places for adults and teens to go. I will start an AA and drug bible study pretty soon.

How do you see your Ministry in two years?

In two years the lord’s gift of this organization will multiply in giving and multiply in families that are back on their feet. We hope that the Lord our God will bless this Ministry and we will have a building for food storage, clothing, furniture and a homeless shelter. We visualize job placement, food pantry, clothe pantry, and Bible study all in one building. This will get help to our community and children off the street.

After talking to Portalatin, some words from the book of James started fetching my mind, “If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food, and one of you say unto them, Depart in peace, be ye warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what do it profit? Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.” James 2:15-17

We as Christians are supposed to talk the talk but walk the walk as well.
