To honor and welcome the spirits of deceased loved ones, members of Sussex Academy’s World Language Honor Society created an ofrenda, a tradition deeply rooted in Mexican culture, in the school cafetorium.
Senior Leni Kuska said an ofrenda is a traditional altar built to celebrate Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead.

“The ofrenda is a way to remember and honor those who have passed, and World Language Honor Society wanted to spread awareness of this famous holiday,” Leni said.
Spanish teacher Nico Caceres advises the World Language Honor Society, and students took this opportunity to honor his ancestors.
“The photos on the ofrenda are family and friends of Señor Caceres that passed away, and there are mementos such as the scissors and yard stick from Señor’s grandfather,” Leni said. “The marigold flowers were all student made, and are traditionally used to decorate during Day of the Dead as their bright petals represent the sun.”

Sussex Academy is a tuition-free, public charter school in Georgetown, Del. Its mission is to foster academic achievement and social responsibility in a small school environment where students participate in a highly accelerated college preparatory program that prepares them for the technological and global mindedness needed for the 21st century and that instills ethical conduct and service to others in their day-to-day lives.
