With more cold and strong winds on the way, I was hoping you could include some of these tips in any weather coverage today and through the weekend.
It’s already been a very cold winter and customer usage continues to increase, which can lead to higher energy bills. These tips can help customers lower their usage to save energy and money:
- Check your thermostat: If it’s safe for your health, try setting your thermostat to 68 degrees. Lowering it by even one degree can save up to 5 percent on heating costs. If you’re able, a smart thermostat connected to your mobile device can help you keep track of your energy use more easily.
- Â Adjust your blinds:Â Let the sunshine in during the day for natural warmth by keeping your blinds up, and once the sun sets, close them to help keep the cold out and the heat in.
- Insulate your home:Â Sealing windows and doors with caulk or weather-stripping, installing storm windows, and closing chimney flues can help keep the warm air inside where you need it most.
- Postpone activities that use a lot of hot water, like doing laundry or running the dishwasher. Â

In addition to the cold, strong winds are forecasted to impact the area. While Delmarva Power is prepared, we also want our customers to be ready with these tips:
- Assemble an emergency storm kit. Include battery-powered radio, flashlight, a first-aid kit, blankets, battery-powered or windup clock, extra batteries, medications, multi-purpose tool and list of important/emergency phone numbers.
- Have a supply of bottled water and easy-to-prepare, non-perishable foods available to last at least 72 hours.
- Keep a flashlight with fresh batteries on each floor of your home.
- Always stay away from down wires and damaged equipment. Call Delmarva Power immediately at 1-800-898-8042.

We are also here to help if a customer is behind on their energy bills. Our Customer Care team is ready to support and can walk customers through assistance programs, like:
- Payment arrangements of up to 12 months for eligible residential customers with past-due balances. Make a down payment on the amount owed and pay the rest through installments in addition to your regular monthly bill.
- Budget billing, which provides a predictable monthly payment based on your electricity usage from the last 12 months.
- High usage alerts, which alerts customers when their usage is trending higher than normal to help manage overall energy use, and energy-management tips to help customers manage energy use to save money now and on future energy bills.
