Sussex Academy student leaders welcomed a number of guests to the school’s second annual open house for elected leaders and community representatives April 24.
Planned and directed by the high school Student Government Association with assistance from students and staff at the elementary and middle school levels, the event permitted students to educate legislators, community leaders and donors to the school Soaring Higher fundraising campaign about the many opportunities available at the public charter school in Georgetown.

Guests were first greeted outside by elementary school students before entering the lobby, where they enjoyed a light breakfast and music, thanks to seventh grade pianist Jackson Cohen.
Middle school students presented information on the Leader in Me philosophy and Project Citizen research assignments, and high school students displayed their winning science fair projects.

Then, guests were escorted into the cafetorium, where students performed songs from the elementary school production of “Suessical Jr.” and the high school performance of “Hadestown.”
Middle and high school choirs each entertained guests, followed by student speeches on their participation and leadership in academic, arts and athletics opportunities. Following the presentations, students led guests on tours throughout the middle and high school.

The morning concluded with a networking session, allowing students to make connections with their community leaders.
Head of School Kyle Bentley said he was proud of the students’ work in bringing the program to fruition.

“What we experienced this morning was the power of giving students a microphone and inviting community leaders into our school to witness firsthand the incredible things happening at Sussex Academy,” Bentley said. “From the arts and athletics to clubs, community service, and academics, our students showcased the excellence, leadership, and passion that define our school community.”
