LEWES, Del. — Sussex County Habitat for Humanity officially broke ground on its newest construction project, ”A Home for Habitat,” a transformational expansion of the affiliate that will create a larger, updated Habitat ReStore and bring the organization’s operations under one roof.
Sussex County Habitat for Humanity staff and board members gathered at the ReStore in Lewes to mark the official beginning of construction on the long-planned project. The groundbreaking represents an important step forward in the organization’s vision to build greater capacity for its work across Sussex County.
The expansion will significantly increase the ReStore’s footprint and create additional space for shopping, donations, inventory, and operations. Once complete, the new facility will also allow Sussex County Habitat for Humanity to bring its staff and operations together in one location, creating a stronger foundation for the organization’s continued growth.
The project is scheduled to be completed in early 2028.

Proceeds from ReStore sales provide unrestricted funding that helps the organization build affordable homes, complete critical home repairs, and support families throughout Sussex County. The expansion is designed to increase the ReStore’s capacity and strengthen this important source of funding for years to come.
A Home for Habitat was launched publicly in April as a campaign focused on building a stronger future for Sussex County Habitat for Humanity. With construction now underway, the project will continue to take shape over the coming months, bringing the organization closer to a new home designed to support its growing impact.
The Habitat ReStore will remain open throughout the construction process. Customers are encouraged to continue shopping for quality new and gently used home furnishings, building materials, appliances, and other household items, while community members can continue donating eligible items to support the ReStore and Habitat’s mission. Due to the construction and limited space, some donation guidelines have been temporarily adjusted, and donors are encouraged to check with the ReStore before bringing in specific items.

Every purchase and every eligible donation helps keep our mission moving forward.”
The project is expected to bring a new level of capacity and efficiency to Sussex County Habitat for Humanity, allowing the organization to strengthen the connection between ReStore operations and its broader housing mission. As the organization continues expanding its work across Sussex County, A Home for Habitat will provide the infrastructure needed to support that growth.
