SALISBURY, Md. (September 21, 2009) – Bringing an in-demand orthopaedic specialty to the region, Scott C. McGovern, M.D., has joined the team of orthopaedic surgeons at Peninsula Orthopaedic Associates as a highly trained spine surgeon. Dr. McGovern is a fellowship-trained orthopaedic surgeon who specializes in cervical, thoracic and lumbar spinal disorders.
Dr. McGovern is the co-director of the newly created Spine Center at Peninsula Regional Medical Center, where he will provide minimally invasive surgery, motion preservation, and advanced nonoperative and pain management techniques to treat all spinal disorders.
Dr. McGovern received his medical doctorate with recognition in research at the State University of New York Stony Brook School of Medicine, where he received the Merck Book Award for Academic Excellence and membership in the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He completed his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the Mayo Clinic where he was honored as co-author for the Mark B. Coventry Outstanding Clinical Research Paper Award. His training also included completing a fellowship in spine surgery and neurological spine surgery at the UCLA Comprehensive Spine Center.
His approach to treatment is that of Dr. William Mayo, of the world-renowned Mayo Clinic. Dr. Mayo said, “The best interest of the patient is the only interest to be considered.”
Dr. McGovern believes each patient deserves a comprehensive, unhurried examination. He states, “My examination for each patient entails listening to them, answering their questions and helping them better understand their bodies and the cause of their symptoms.”
