CHLI’s Congressional Public Policy Briefing on Puerto Rico

Yesterday (July 31) the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI) hosted a CHLI Public Policy Briefing on Puerto Rico titled “Strengthening U.S. – Puerto Rico Policy: A Win for Security & Prosperity.”

The briefing featured opening remarks from CHLI Chairwoman and Fmr. Congresswoman, Hon. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, and Puerto Rico’s Resident Commissioner, Hon. Jenniffer González-Colón.

Then Puerto Rico Statehood Council (PRSC) Executive Director, George Laws Garcia, moderated an expert panel discussion into issues of economic development, commerce, trade, technology/innovation, national security, and how all of it connects to the island’s political status.

Panelists included: Andrés Martínez-Fernández, Senior Policy Analyst, Allison Center for National Security at The Heritage Foundation; Jose Luis Rivera-Rivera, Former President and Current Board Member of the Puerto Rico Economic Association; Christina D. Ponsa-Kraus, George Welwood Murray Professor of Legal History at Columbia Law School; and Dr. Justin Velez-Hagan, National Puerto Rican Chamber of Commerce.
