Wilmington, DE – In celebration of the International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) on September 21st, At-Large Councilwoman Maria D. Cabrera joins global efforts to promote peace and solidarity. Established in 1981 by the United Nations (UN), Peace Day provides a platform for individuals, organizations, and communities worldwide to commit to peace-building and conflict resolution.

This year, the International Day of Peace holds special significance as it marks the 25th anniversary of the UN Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace. The declaration envisions a global culture where human rights, dignity, and peaceful conflict resolution are at the forefront of societal values.

Councilwoman Cabrera is urging Wilmington residents to embrace these principles and take active steps to foster peace within their communities.

Locally, Peace Week Delaware—an initiative dedicated to promoting peace-making values year-round—will host a series of events from October 19 to October 27, 2024.

These activities provide opportunities for individuals to engage in peace-making efforts and reflect on how peace can be cultivated in their everyday lives. Councilwoman Cabrera encourages the public to participate in one or more of these enriching events.

”Peace Week Delaware is a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together in the spirit of unity and dialogue. Whether it’s through a walk, art exhibition, or engaging in discussions about social issues like voter education, food insecurity, or reintegration of returning citizens, there are countless ways to contribute to peace-building,” said Councilwoman Cabrera. “We must continue to create spaces where everyone feels respected, valued, and heard.”

With dozens of events already planned and more to come, Peace Week Delaware offers something for everyone, including opportunities for volunteerism.

”By becoming a volunteer, you extend your commitment to peace beyond this week and help us build a stronger, more compassionate community,” Councilwoman Cabrera added.

”Together, let’s make Wilmington a beacon of peace, unity, and understanding,” said Councilwoman Cabrera.
