Dover, DE, August 15, 2024 – The Delaware Hispanic Commission strongly condemns the recent statements made during the gubernatorial debate on August 14 at the Dover Library, where Republican candidate for Governor, Bobby Williamson, referred to immigrants as “nomads” and “criminals.” These remarks are not only inaccurate but also harmful, perpetuating dangerous stereotypes that do not reflect the true contributions of immigrants, particularly the Latino community, to our state.
Latinos are a vital part of Delaware’s fabric, contributing positively in numerous ways. Beyond bringing cultural diversity, the Latino community in Delaware wields a spending power of over $2 billion. Furthermore, one out of every four new businesses in Delaware is opened by a Latino entrepreneur. These businesses create jobs, stimulate economic growth, and enrich our communities.
“We must recognize and celebrate the invaluable contributions of Latinos and all immigrant communities to Delaware, rather than allowing divisive rhetoric to overshadow their achievements,” said Delaware Hispanic Commission Chair Carlos de los Ramos.
We thank the Delaware Journalism Collaborative and Spotlight Delaware for hosting last night’s 2024 Gubernatorial Debate, and we thank all the candidates for their participation.
The Delaware Hispanic Commission, with the mission to uphold the impact and address the needs of the Hispanic community in Delaware, was established by Executive Order Number Twenty-Eight by then-Governor Jack Markell. The Commission advises the Governor, the Cabinet, members of the General Assembly, and other state policymakers on ways to improve the delivery of services to Delaware’s Hispanic community. The Commission currently consists of 18 Governor-appointed members who represent various socioeconomic and geographical areas of Latin America.
