New Castle County Executive (and emocratic gubernatorial nominee) Matt Meyer joined union workers from the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) on the picket line at the Port of Wilmington as the strike began at midnight yesterday (September 30). This marks the first strike by the ILA since 1977, with workers demanding fair wages and job security.
Meyer expressed his support for the ILA and their efforts to secure a fair deal.
“These union workers are the backbone of our economy. They keep goods moving, businesses running, and Delaware connected to the global marketplace. It is unacceptable for them to face wage stagnation, and uncertainty about their futures,” Meyer said on the picket line.
“As governor, I will fight for policies that ensure workers are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.”
The strike is part of a nationwide movement by 45,000 dockworkers across U.S. ports, seeking stronger protections and a fair contract.
